Overview

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program is a residency status introduced by the Government of Japan in April 2019. It aims to address Japan's labor shortages by welcoming foreign workers with specific skills and expertise.

Some key points about the SSW program:

• Eligibility:Foreign nationals aged 18 or above with considerable knowledge or experience in specific sectors.
• Sectors: There are 16 designated industrial fields, including nursing care, automobile repair, food service, agriculture, and more.
• Skill Standards: Skill levels are assessed through sector-specific exams. Those who have completed three years in the Technical Intern Training program are exempt from these exams.
• Japanese Language Proficiency:Required for daily life and workplace communication, confirmed through Japanese language exams. Exemptions apply for those who have completed the Technical Intern Training program.
• Period of Stay:Initially up to 5 years, with the possibility of renewal.
• Family Accompaniment:Not permitted for SSW (i), but possible for SSW (ii) if certain requirements are met

SSW Exams:

Japanese Language Proficiency Test:

1. This test measures your basic Japanese language skills required for daily life and work in Japan.
2. It's a computer-based test focusing on reading, listening, and practical communication skills.
3. It's essential unless you've already completed three years in the Technical Intern Training program, in which case you're exempt.

Skills Proficiency Test:

1. This test is specific to the industrial field you wish to work in and assesses your practical and technical skills.
2. There are different tests for each of the 16 designated sectors, such as nursing care, construction, agriculture, food service, etc.
3. It ensures that you have the required expertise to perform tasks in your chosen sector.
